How our guides help

Turn the ideas into meals you recognise. Learn which grain to choose, which fish to buy and how to cook well through a northern winter.

How to make a start

Choose one familiar meal. Change the grain, add a vegetable that grows here and cook it in rapeseed oil. Build from there at a pace that suits you.

Why eat like a northerner?

Because the Mediterranean diet is built on what grows in the Mediterranean. Olive groves, lemons and ripe tomatoes are someone else’s climate. Ours grows oats, rye, barley, carrots, swede, beetroot, cabbage and blackcurrants, and our seas are full of mackerel and herring.

A northern diet is not a compromise. Wholegrain rye and oats, oily fish twice a week, rapeseed oil and a freezer full of berries make a genuinely good way to eat.

Traditional Nordic eating varies by country and household. We describe a pattern, not a prescription, and you can adjust portions to your own needs.

Make northern eating part of your day

Six useful things to learn, practise and make your own.

Understand the approach

Discover what Nordic eating looks like, and why it is often described as the Mediterranean diet of the north.

Choose the wholegrain

Get to know rye, oats, barley and crispbread, and where each one earns its place in an ordinary week.

Make simple food swaps

Explore barley under a stew, an open rye sandwich at lunch and roasted roots in place of chips.

Eat more oily fish

Herring, mackerel, salmon and trout — including the tinned and frozen versions, which cost a fraction of the fresh.

Keep berries all year

Frozen blueberries, blackcurrants and lingonberries make a northern diet work in February as well as July.

Build lasting habits

Keep the pleasure of cooking and eating. Focus on small, repeatable choices and realistic expectations, rather than an all-or-nothing rulebook.
